01.Getting started

Which devices and iOS versions are supported?

Minine Aloud runs on iPhone and iPad on iOS 26 or later. We build on the newest system frameworks (SwiftUI, SwiftData, StoreKit 2, the Liquid Glass design system), which aren't available on earlier versions.

Do I need an account?

No. You can import, listen with the on-device Apple engine, and even purchase Pro without signing in (the purchase then applies to that device). Signing in — with Apple or an email code — is only needed if you want your Pro subscription and quota to follow you across devices, or to use optional iCloud sync.

What languages does the app read aloud?

Nine: Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English (US), English (UK), Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, and German. You can pin a voice per language or let the voice follow the text's language automatically. The app interface itself ships in English and 简体中文.

02.Importing documents

Which file formats can I import?

Plain text (.txt) and Markdown (.md) are free. PDF and EPUB import require Pro. You can also paste text from the clipboard for instant listening, or share text into the app from Safari and other apps via the iOS share sheet — both free.

My PDF reads out page numbers and headers. Can I stop that?

Yes — enable PDF cleanup in Settings. It strips repeating headers, footers, and page numbers before the text reaches the voice. It's heuristic, so unusually formatted PDFs may still leak the odd artifact; report stubborn cases to us with a sample if you can.

A PDF imports but nothing is read. Why?

Most likely it's a scanned PDF — pages that are images, with no text layer. Minine Aloud reads the text layer and doesn't currently run OCR. If the PDF has selectable text in other apps, but not in Aloud, write to us with the file.

Text I shared from another app isn't showing up.

Shared text lands in an inbox that the app picks up when it next opens — launch the app and the document appears in your library. The share extension accepts plain text; for web pages, select the text you want and share the selection.

03.Voices & engines

Which engine should I use?
  • Apple on-device — offline, free, private. Text never leaves your phone. Quality depends on which system voices you've downloaded.
  • AWS Polly (Pro) — warm neural narration, synthesized in the cloud and cached locally, so re-listening costs nothing.
  • Azure Neural (Pro) — streaming synthesis with the fastest time-to-first-word, plus multilingual voices that keep the same narrator across mixed Chinese/English text.

If a cloud engine fails mid-read (network drop, service hiccup), the app automatically falls back to the Apple engine so playback continues.

I selected a cloud voice but the app used a system voice.

Two common reasons: your Pro subscription isn't active on this device (open the paywall and tap Restore Purchases), or you've hit the daily cloud-synthesis quota — check the quota view in Settings. Cloud engines also require a network connection.

Can I get more Apple voices, or better ones?

Yes. Install higher-quality system voices in iOS Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices. Minine Aloud lists whatever voices are installed on your device, so a downloaded premium system voice shows up in the picker automatically.

04.Playback

Does playback continue in the background or with the screen locked?

Yes. Aloud uses the audio background mode, so reading continues when you switch apps or lock the screen. Play/pause, skip, and ±5-second controls are available on the lock screen, in Control Center, and from your headphones.

How do playback speeds work?

Choose 0.75×, 1.0×, 1.25×, 1.5×, or 2.0×. Speed changes preserve pitch, so voices stay natural at higher rates.

Will the app remember where I stopped?

Yes, per document, down to the character. On the next launch the app offers to resume your last session, and any document you reopen continues from its own saved position. You can also drop bookmarks manually and jump between them.

The voice pauses briefly between sections of a long document.

Long texts are read as a queue of chunks with the next chunk pre-fetched, so transitions should be seamless. If you hear gaps on a cloud voice, it's usually a slow connection delaying the prefetch — the app will catch up, or you can switch to the offline engine.

05.AI features

What can the AI assistant do?

Summarize a document, build a navigable outline, highlight the key passages, and answer questions about the text in a chat grounded in the document. Long jobs run as background tasks — you can keep listening while they finish. All AI features require Pro.

Are my documents used to train AI?

No. Text is sent to our backend only to produce the summary or answer you asked for, processed transiently, and not used to train models — ours or our providers'. See the Privacy Policy §4 for details.

Where are AI notes and highlights stored?

On your device, by default. If you want them on your other devices, enable iCloud sync in Settings — it's opt-in and uses your personal iCloud container, which we can't read.

An AI answer looks wrong.

It happens — AI output can be inaccurate, especially on tables, math, and dense legalese. Treat summaries as a map, not the territory, and verify anything important against the source text (tap a highlight to jump there).

06.Subscription

What does Pro unlock?

Cloud voices (AWS Polly and Azure Neural), PDF and EPUB import, all AI features, and a 200,000-character daily cloud-synthesis quota (versus 2,000 on free). Free keeps the full player, on-device voices, pasted text, TXT/Markdown, stats, and spaced review — forever.

Is there a free trial?

The annual plan ($69.99/year) includes a 7-day free trial. The exact terms are shown on the in-app subscribe sheet before you confirm. Cancel during the trial and you pay nothing.

How do I cancel?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple: iOS Settings → your Apple ID → Subscriptions → Minine Aloud → Cancel. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge. Pro stays active until the end of the paid period.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, and request a refund for Minine Aloud. Statutory consumer rights (such as the EU 14-day withdrawal right) still apply where applicable.

I bought Pro on my old phone — how do I move it?

On the new device, open the paywall and tap Restore Purchases while signed into the same Apple ID. If you also created a Minine account, signing in links your subscription across devices automatically.

07.Account & data

How do I delete my account?

In the app: Settings → Account → Delete Account. This permanently removes your account record and associated server-side data. Your local library stays on the device until you delete the app. Remember to cancel any active subscription separately in iOS Settings — deleting the account does not stop Apple billing.

Where are my documents stored? Are they uploaded?

Your library lives on your device. Text is transmitted only when you use a cloud voice or an AI feature, and only the text needed for that request. The on-device engine sends nothing anywhere. Full details in the Privacy Policy.

Does the app track me or show ads?

No ads, no third-party trackers, no analytics resale. The app's Apple privacy manifest declares zero data collected for tracking.

08.Troubleshooting

Playback stops when I lock the screen.

Check that Background App Refresh is enabled for Minine Aloud (iOS Settings → General → Background App Refresh) and that Low Power Mode isn't aggressively suspending audio. If it persists, force-quit and relaunch the app, then write to us with your device model and iOS version.

A cloud voice keeps failing.

The app retries and then falls back to the on-device engine so your reading continues. Persistent failures usually mean a network issue or an exhausted daily quota (visible in Settings). If neither applies, report it — occasionally we disable a provider remotely for maintenance.

Chinese text is read with the wrong voice.

Enable follow text language in voice settings so the narrator switches with the text, or pick an Azure multilingual voice, which keeps one narrator across mixed Chinese/English passages.

I think I found a bug.

Email [email protected] with your device model, iOS version, what you did, what you expected, and what happened. If it involves a specific document, attaching it (or a shareable excerpt) makes fixes much faster.
